Maadi Cup Rowing Highlights

A record number of A Finals for Iona at Maadi 2023 and 3 medals!

Iona has a proud rowing tradition, and 16 Iona rowers attended Maadi 2023. Maadi Cup is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest school sporting event, with 2267 rowers competing in 52 events and 430 races. It is the National Championship for school rowing in NZ, and competition is tough. To win a medal is a great achievement. To win three is truly outstanding.

Congratulations to Angalla Carney, who entered two events and came home with a medal from each race, and doubles partner Libby Windhager. These medals are an indication of their exceptional sporting ability and the support of their Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club coach, Nick Sye.

The girls train under coaches at the Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club, which also provides the boats and equipment. Thank you to these dedicated coaches, the parents who accompanied the girls away and the spectators who have cheered on the crews. A special shout-out goes to Hugh Ritchie for transporting the boats to and from Lake Karapiro. We are incredibly grateful for all that this amazing support team has done; the girls have all gained such invaluable experience.
